Q: What are your areas of expertise?
A: There are many aspects in the practice of Ophthalmology that make it an interesting and rewarding field. However, I would say that my biggest area of expertise is cataract surgery. I have spent the last 20 years dedicating myself to ongoing improvements in surgical technique, as well as staying on the cutting edge of current technology. Beyond surgery, I pride myself in being a very good clinician. That means evaluating eye conditions thoroughly using a solid knowledge foundation, but also remembering to be a good listener.
Q: What did you learn from your previous positions?
A: Always be as forthright with patients as possible. Do not try to tell them only what they want to hear. It’s important to set realistic expectations. Understand that I don’t always have all the answers and be humble enough to admit that. In terms of surgery, explain what is possible and do not promise results that cannot be guaranteed.
Q: What sets you apart from other doctors who do similar things?
A: There are many very good Ophthalmologists out there. Some excel in the office and others in the Operating Room. I believe that I perform well in both settings. In the office, I try to find common ground with patients to establish a trusting and lasting relationship. I’m a generally curious person and like to learn about my patients. Surgically, I demand a high standard for myself. I strive to attain the best outcome possible tailored to each individual patient’s specific situation. My goal is to give every visit or surgery the same level of care and expertise that I would want if I were the one being treated.
Q: What are you most excited about regarding your new work with The Eye Care Center?
A: I am excited to be working with a great group of high-quality and accomplished Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. I’m also excited to operate in the Office-Based Surgery (OBS) setting. This is the first of its kind in the Greater Rochester area and I’m happy to be a part of it.
Q: What motivates you as a professional?
A: Part of this is personal. I challenge myself to be the best Ophthalmologist that I am capable of. There’s a strong drive toward excellence. The other part is service to others. As an Ophthalmologist, I have a great opportunity to treat and improve quality of life for the members of the community. Ultimately, I’d like to look back at my career and feel that I made a positive difference in people’s lives.
Q: What do you like to do by yourself?
A: I love to read. Particularly anything related to “history,” but my interests are diverse. I also like to talk walks by myself. It calms me and gives me the opportunity to collect my thoughts. This is where self-reflection occurs and where I strategize about my life and career.
Q: What do you like to do with your family, in your spare time?
A: I grew up in Rochester and my parents still live there. I am married to Sarah Klein, an Optometrist. We are raising two boys. Much of our lives are centered around the sports that the boys play. However, my wife is an avid golfer and paddle player. I golf when I can. When we’re not involved in a sporting practice or event, we enjoy watching movies or a series on one of the streaming services. We also try to carve out time to travel together.
Q: Tell me something funny about yourself!
A: According to my family, I am the king of one-liners and “dad jokes.” I’m always looking for new material.
