Photo-therapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) is one treatment for corneal surface diseases and scars. PTK is not used to reduce dependency on glasses or contact but rather to produce to a smoother and clear cornea for all around comfort. PTK uses the excimer laser to remove damaged corneal tissue due to such scars, recurrent corneal erosion syndrome, anterior basement membrane dystrophy as well as other corneal dystrophies. PTK is often covered by insurance companies since it is a treatment for a medical problem. PTK is a surgery, as with any procedure there are risks. Your doctor can determine whether or not PTK is necessary and discuss the benefits and risks that apply to your condition.
